Further Mathematics

As well as all of the content from A Level Maths, you will also study two units of Further Maths (Core Pure 1&2), an extra Statistics unit (FS1) and a choice of one of four other units: Mechanics (FM1), Statistics (FS2), Decision (D1) and Further Pure (FP1).

In Core Pure you will venture deeper into topics such as vectors, proof, series, calculus, and trigonometry. You will also explore a range of new topics such as Complex Numbers, Matrices, Hyperbolics and differential equations.

AS Further Maths:

Paper 1 – Core Pure Maths (1hr 40mins – 50%)

Paper 2 – Further Pure 1 & Further Statistics 1 (1hr 40mins – 50%)

or Further Statistics 1 & Further Statistics 2 (1hr 40mins – 50%)

or Further Statistics 1 & Further Mechanics 1 (1hr 40mins – 50%)

or Further Statistics 1 & Decision (1hr 40mins – 50%)

A Level Further Maths:

Paper 1 – Core Pure Maths 1 (1hr 30mins – 25%)

Paper 2 – Core Pure Maths 2 (1hr 30mins – 25%)

Paper 3 – Further Statistics 1 (1hr 30mins – 25%)

Paper 4 – Option module (1hr 30mins – 25%), will be a choice of either:

a) Further Pure 1 or

b) Further Statistics 2 or

c) Further Mechanics 1 or

d) Decision 1

While it is not a requirement for most university courses, studying Further Maths will put you in a much better position if you want to study Mathematics or any subject that uses Mathematics (Engineering, Physics, Computer Science) at a leading university.

If applying for Computer Science, at top universities (including Oxford and Cambridge) an A Level in Further Maths is more desirable than a Computer Science A Level.

Students can only study 3 A levels, but must start 4 if taking Further Maths with a Grade 8 in GCSE Maths, until the first half-term grades.
