Exam Board: OCR A
In the first year, the course covers basic biological principles including biological molecules, DNA structure, cell biology, transport systems, disease and biodiversity. In the second year, students will cover a breadth of aspects of biology including metabolic pathways, genetics, excretion, neurology and ecology.
The A Level course is assessed at the end of your two years, by three examination papers (six hours in total). At least 10% of the question paper assessment covers mathematical skills at level 2 or above. At least 15% of the marks in examinations will assess practical skills.
Biology is required for those intending to study Medicine, Dentistry, Physiotherapy, Optometry, Pharmacy, Veterinary Science or any Biological Science. It is also recommended for Food Science, Forensic Science, Nursing and many other careers.
Class practical work will be held throughout the year, written up and kept in a practical folder. At the end of the two years, in addition to a grade in A level Biology, students will receive either a pass or fail for the practical component.
