Homer’s Iliad and Virgil’s Aeneid – ‘The world of the hero’: Year 1 and Year 2:
Two poems which are considered to be the cornerstones of Western literature and thought. The study will consider what it meant to be a hero during the Trojan War (Iliad) and what it means to be human in the aftermath of the War (Aeneid); a must for fans of Greek Mythology.
Imperial Image: Augustan Rome: Year 1
In this unit we will study one of the most fascinating, yet volatile, eras of Roman history. We will follow the meteoric rise of Julius Caesar’s nephew Octavian, as he struggles for power and supremacy over the Roman world. This unit combines the study of Classical literature, material culture and art, culminating in a trip to Rome, Pompeii and Herculaneum, where the everlasting effects of his influence can be witnessed first-hand; a must for fans of Game of Thrones.
Greek Religion: Year 2
Religion permeated the society of ancient Greece. It was an essential part of each household (oikos), family and City-state (polis) as it was fundamental to civic life. In this unit we will explore the varying gods which made up the Greek pantheon and the cultural mythology which shaped their backgrounds, relationships and characteristics. We will also explore how the ancient Greeks worshipped these gods and examine the important daily religious activities so important to their society.
You will be assessed through three formal examinations, which you will sit at the end of the course (two-years). Before this date, you will be routinely prepared for examinations by sitting at least three mock exams a year.
This course is an extremely popular choice, which is highly regarded by top universities. Classical Civilisation is one of the oldest taught subjects in the world alongside medicine and law. Furthermore, the study of ancient history and the classical world has never been more relevant to contemporary society. Indeed, Classicists are pragmatic people; people who learn to see the world differently and think outside of the box. Students regularly go on to study the subject at our leading universities.
