Planting for the Future – A Greener St Dominic’s Campus!
In March 2025, our BTEC Business students worked in partnership with the Climate Action Society to plant 120 trees donated by the Woodland Trust. Through working with this conservation charity, St Dominic’s has funded over 30,500 trees. This is part of our college’s commitment to sustainability. By acting, we are not only enhancing our college’s green spaces but also providing habitat for wildlife, reducing carbon emission, improving air quality and preventing climate change. The students at St. Dominic’s have increasing concerns about urban pollution and climate change, we believe it is essential for UK institutions to contribute to a greener future. With approximately 3 billion trees in the UK everyone has 47 trees per person, the lowest rate, when compared to other countries in Europe.
With support from our College’s Groundsman Dominic Kelly, and the donation from the Woodland Trust, we were able to plant a variety of 120 saplings, including apple and cherry. Dominic marked out where we should dig and plant the saplings. Despite the mud the entire BTEC class participated alongside the Climate Action Society volunteers, with the aim of making our spaces a healthier place for both humans and animals. This tree planting initiative marks the continued effort that St. Dominic’s makes towards a greener and more sustainable environment for our students. As 30% of our Earth’s oxygen comes from trees, it is crucial for those who can, to make a change for the better. St. Dominic’s students were involved in a similar tree planting initiative three years ago and we are now enjoying and appreciating the growth of those trees.
We look forward to seeing these saplings we have planted mature as we continue to make a positive impact on our community.
