Bank of England Presentation
On Wednesday 8 October 2025, students at St Dominic’s Sixth Form College were treated to a highly engaging and informative presentation by Andy Beale, a representative of the Bank of England. Delivered in the college chapel, the 60-minute session offered students a fascinating overview of the Bank’s role in the UK economy – with relatable examples, including the ever-popular Tesco Meal Deal, to explain how economic decisions affect daily life.
Andy began with a concise history of the Bank, from its founding in 1694 to its current role as the UK’s central bank. He outlined its key responsibilities: maintaining monetary and financial stability, setting interest rates, issuing banknotes, and supervising financial institutions to ensure a stable financial system.
A major focus of the presentation was monetary policy, particularly how the Bank uses the Bank Rate (the UK’s base interest rate) to manage inflation and support the economy. Andy explained the Bank’s 2% inflation target and how interest rate changes can encourage or discourage consumer spending and borrowing. He also explored the interconnectedness of inflation, interest rates, and employment, using real-world examples such as the 2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and recent energy price shocks to contextualise the Bank’s role.
Students gained rare insight into the workings of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), which meets every six weeks to review economic data and set interest rates. Particularly interesting was Andy’s comment on the qualitative nature of the MPC’s decision-making – highlighting that economic judgement, not just data, plays a significant role.
Towards the end of the session, Andy spoke about career opportunities at the Bank of England, sharing his own varied career path through the NHS, consultancy, and public policy. He encouraged students to explore roles in economics, finance, data analysis, and public policy, noting that while an economics background can be helpful, it is by no means essential. He also highlighted the wide range of internships, apprenticeships, and graduate programmes available to young people.
The talk concluded with a lively Q&A session, where students asked thoughtful questions on topics such as Quantitative Easing, salary expectations in the City, and the skills and attributes needed for a successful career in finance and policy.
