Krupesh Harani from the London Assembly Visits St Dominic’s
On the 9th of June the Politics Department were fortunate enough to welcome Krupesh Harani who gave a talk on his role in the London Assembly and representing Harrow and Brent. It was a great opportunity to further learn about the process of the relationship between the mayor of London and the London Assembly. We also discussed the main role of a member of the London Assembly which is to provide a scrutiny and lobby for local issues which many students found very helpful. Krupresh’s main role is working with transport and healthcare and is following Sadiq Khan’s goal of making all London train stations provide step free services. This highlighted to students how local issues are fought for and how they can make a direct change.
Following the talk, attendees had the opportunity to ask Krupesh questions about his role, the work he does, and issues that mattered to them. One student inquired about how regional-level work, particularly in the area of health, is communicated to local communities, expressing concern that language barriers and other accessibility issues often result in a lack of awareness. Another student inquired about the relationship between the Mayor of London and the London Assembly members. It was insightful to hear Krupesh’s perspective on this, as it relates directly to devolution- a key topic covered in the A Level Politics course. Overall, was a thoroughly engaging and insightful talk which allowed us to think constructively and think about how decisions affect our everyday life.
