National Science Week

National Science Week

As part National Science Week, we took part in a tower building competition, where the aim of the project was to build the tallest and strongest tower, using only sellotape, scissors and newspaper within the given time of 40 minutes. We arranged ourselves into 3 teams and began planning. From our physics knowledge, we knew a strong, stable tower would have a wide base and a low centre of mass, so the teams used various strategies. When the 40 minutes were up, we were surprised to see how different all the three teams' approaches were. Ultimately it was difficult to decide on a winning team as the taller towers lacked stability. While being fun, the task forced us to express our creative selves under time constraints along with a limited availability of resources- this precisely depicted the conditions in the world where all professionals are required to meet deadlines using limited resources available to them. From our perspective, this competition was a perfect blend of physics and critical thinking which made it a fun all-round task.
