Celebrating Success - St Doms Team Take Top Honours
John Lyon MUN Conference
The John Lyon MUN Conference (9th and 10th March) saw the St Dominic’s MUN team take home not only the Best Delegate Award (Shaherzad Gokal representing Australia on the Political Committee) but the Best Delegation of the Conference Award (Ibrahim Mohammad and Vishal Matthews representing France) as well. Well done to the entire St Dominic’s MUN team but those three students in particular.
The two day Conference opened with a thought provoking keynote speech by Evan Davis, Author, Economist and BBC presenter. In committees, delegates debated a range of issues such as teenage mental health, nuclear non-proliferation and in the General Assembly on Sunday they discussed who owned the moon. Our students more than held their own in the debates and showed some intelligent and clever responses when taking on points of order; the level of debate has consistently risen over each conference.
The team has one more conference to attend this season - the prestigious three day Haileybury MUN Conference 23rd March – 25th March. We look forward to seeing how our students represent Tajikistan and Tunisia.
Below are some comments from the team:
I enjoyed my time in the John Lyons Model United Nations conference and would definitely recommend to those who are looking to engage in discussing about world issues which requires many people's input. I had an amazing time meeting new people and seeing the world from others perspective. Phoenix Chan
I really enjoyed my MUN experience, it allowed me to speak about issues I have deep enjoyment for, and to challenge myself with my public speaking skills. It enhanced my confidence and ability to think on the spot and come up with solutions - putting myself in the shoes of different states meant I understood the challenges faced around the world. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and I’m glad I attended. Shaherzad Gokal
It was an incredibly enjoyable and thought provoking day full of fruitful debate. Vishal Matthews
It was a challenging yet fun day. It helped me to develop my public speaking skills and after completing the MUN conference I felt as if I was a lot more confident taking part in debates and speaking to people. I highly recommend! Jordan Bhardwaj
