Students join a tutor group on arriving at the College and usually remain together for two years. The tutor group meets twice each week. This allows for effective communication, administration and support. The tutor is the first point of contact for students and parents. In addition there are year managers who, together with support staff, form the pastoral team under the direction of the Assistant Principal.
The Careers Education and Guidance programme is supplemented by HE talks from the most pupular university destinations as well as qualified advice staff based in the Learning Resource Centre. Second year students receive effective guidance developed over many years that ensures an excellent record of progression to higher education each year.
Electronic registration in each lesson ensures that an accurate record of attendance is kept with rigorous monitoring of any falling short of the high expectations. Each week the tutor checks the students' attendance record since full attendance at lessons is necessary if students are to ensure academic success. An attendance record by subject and effort grades is produced each half term. This information provides the basis for reporting home to parents as well as specific guidance from the tutor on setting targets for improvement.
