A-level English Language helps you to explore and understand the connection between language, society and the individual. You will learn how conversation works in everyday life, how language has changed over time, how writers construct texts to achieve certain aims and how children learn to speak and write. You will also be able to create your own texts, as well as carry out some original research. English Language combines well with all other A-levels, including Science, Maths and Law. The skills it develops are highly valued by employers and universities.
NB.
If you follow this A-level, you are in a good position to choose University degrees in Linguistics, English Language and, at some universities, English Studies. However, if you are more interested in the traditional English Literature degree, you should choose English Literature A-level.

Coursework details*
For Unit 2, you write two creative pieces with accompanying commentaries.
The total length of the pieces will be 1500 – 3000 words and the commentaries will be 1000 – 1500 words. Your folder is worth 40% of your AS marks.
For Unit 4, you research an area of language use by collecting data, analysing your results, and evaluating your method. Your final investigation will be 2000 – 4000 words and is worth 40% of your A2 marks.
For both AS and A2 coursework, you prepare drafts for discussion with your teacher and receive individual support in class and through College Workshops.
