Do you enjoy finding out how other people see the world and re-create it through language in stories, plays and poems? English Literature A-level introduces you to a wide range of modern and older texts from all genres. It develops your ability to read complex texts, write fluently and express yourself confidently in discussion.  All employers and universities value these skills. They are useful in most careers and English graduates enter the fields of law, management, marketing, government, journalism and broadcasting.

English Literature combines well with all other A-levels. Currently at St Dominic’s, A-level English students are also studying science, business, economics, psychology, art, music, film and modern languages as well as traditional humanities subjects like history and politics.

Coursework details:*

For Unit 2, you write one essay on a Shakespearean tragedy and one on any other play. One of your pieces may have a re-creative element. Each piece will be 1200 – 1500 words. This unit is worth 40% of your AS marks.

For Unit 4, you read four texts and write two essays. One essay of 1500 – 2000 words will compare two of your texts. The other of 1200 – 1500 will apply critical ideas to texts you have studied. One of your pieces may have a re-creative element. This unit is worth 40% of your A2 marks.

For both AS and A2 coursework, you prepare drafts for discussion with your teacher and receive individual support through College Workshops.
