Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for Young People

Two St. Dominic's students have received the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Award for their outstanding contribution to the community and were invited by the London Assembly to attend a ceremony at City Hall.

Volunteers

In October students received Volunteering Certificates from The Worshipful The Mayor of Harrow, Cllr. John Nickolay, for completing voluntary work.  Following two visits to St. Dominic’s by The Mayor, a group of staff and students were invited to the Civic Centre.  The visit included a tour of the Council Chamber and the Mayor’s Parlour where we were given a fascinating insight into the role of the Mayor, and a potted history of Harrow.  The student group consisted mainly of those who had undertaken extensive voluntary work during their time at St. Dominic’s and the invitation from the Mayor was in recognition of their selfless hard work for the benefit of others.  It is apt that the motto on the Harrow Coat of Arms translates as ‘the well-being of the people is the highest law’.

Jack Petchey Award

For this Award, Tutor groups undertake a project which involves doing something really positive for other people. This could involve a charity or community organisation, One student takes on the leadership role for the project and becomes the spokesperson for the group.

St. Vincent de Paul Welldon Activity Centre

WAC is a Day Care Centre based in Welldon Crescent, Harrow. Its aim is to provide a safe and happy environment for the members of our local community who are disadvantaged through emotional, physical or learning disabilities, with an emphasis on respect for their rights, needs and dignity. It is open between 9.30 a.m. to 2.30 p.m., Monday to Friday. The activities there include arts and crafts, discussions, games, music/movement and dancing, literacy and numeracy, religion and prayers etc. Our involvement falls under the umbrella of The St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) at St. Dominic's. We have a group of students taking part in this project who visit the Centre for an hour once a week. This is a very worthwhile project because in helping to care for the disadvantaged, our students will gain social awareness and be encouraged to get involved in local charity projects.

Links with the Apostles of Jesus Seminary in Uganda

We are very pleased to have established a link with the Apostles of Jesus Seminary at Bukinda in Uganda. This is a Catholic boarding school and the students at the school come from very different backgrounds to our students. Jean Johnson, one of our Ofsted inspectors introduced us to this school. She works closely with them helping to provide support and resources. They have very inadequate facilities and the pupils often come from very poor homes. A good education is the only hope the pupils have to gain a better life. St Dominics has already provided books and materials.
