School Direct

In 2012 the new School Direct Programme replaced the Graduate Teacher Programme (GTP) which is now closed to new entrants.  School Direct is intended to help schools take a leading role in Initial Teacher Training (ITT) where they offer ITT places and work with accredited ITT providers to deliver training.

Do you know your School Direct options?

School Direct (Training), which is similar to the current PGCE

It is open to all graduates and funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee who will be eligible for the standard student support package, including training bursaries, tuition fee loans and scholarships where eligible.  The trainee may receive a bursary from the National College for Teaching and Leadership.

School Direct Training Programme (salaried)

It is an employment-based route into teaching for high quality graduates with three or more years’ career experience. The trainee is employed as an unqualified teacher by the school or college – there will no longer be a “supernumerary requirement”, as there is with the current GTP. The National College for Teaching and Leadership provides funding which the school can use to subsidise the trainee’s salary and/or training. Candidates must have 3 years of work experience to apply for this programme.
