Part Time Working

Many students at St Dominic’s have part-time jobs in the evenings and weekends.  This can be beneficial – providing an insight into the world of work, increasing self-confidence and independence.  However, research has shown that a student working over 9 hours per week achieves on average one grade lower than expected in each A level subject.  Those working less than 9 hours per week achieve half a grade lower.  The study showed that when students worked was significant. For example, two hours after College was sensible, whereas long evening shifts were detrimental, as this meant homework could not be completed in the evening and students were often tired and unable to concentrate in lessons the next day. Consequently, we recommend that the maximum hours a sixth form student should work would be one day at the weekend (and perhaps one short evening shift).  Hours should also be reduced around public examination periods and when coursework deadlines occur.
