How We Support Students

We have an Assistant Principal who heads up the Oxbridge programme. He has attended several training sessions run by Oxford and Cambridge universities and had meetings with admissions tutors on many occasions.

This starts in October of the first year at St Dominic’s with our Gifted & Talented meeting where we raise their aspirations and show them the Oxbridge reading lists for each subject, encourage them to take on an Extended Project (EPQ) and to attend free lectures at Imperial, UCL and King’s College etc. This wider reading and study is essential in developing and evidencing their love for the subject.

In January, we have our HE and Careers day where we have lectures from a wide variety of universities, and we have our Fair where students can find out about many varied universities and courses including Oxbridge.  In the afternoon we have a presentation by representatives from both Oxford and Cambridge, after which students can ask questions.

We have several sessions on:

  • how to apply
  • who should apply
  • writing a personal statement
  • wider reading
  • interview techniques

The second year students who have been for interviews at Oxbridge then speak to the prospective applicants about how they prepared for selection tests, interviews and any work that needed sending. This is often a very useful session.

All students who apply to Oxbridge will have a mock interview with an experienced interviewer who has, at their disposal, a plethora of real questions that have been asked in the past for most subjects (gleaned from interviews with past students). For the very best candidates this will be a panel interview similar to a real Oxbridge interview.

In March we have our Alumni Careers Event which includes past students who have previously, or are currently, studying at Oxford or Cambridge.  Our Librarian and HE Co-ordinator also run a session on information seeking, reading and interview tips.

Students are able to take admissions tests at College and we have sessions to help them prepare for the different sections of the UKCAT, BMAT, LNAT and TSA.

The College student learning platform (i-Learn) has a section on Oxbridge and includes many valuable sections including reading lists, Colleges where we have had past successes, interview tips and links, examples of successful personal statements (and sections thereof). Our library also has a wide range of books about Oxbridge applications, together with a variety of journals and quality newspapers.

Teachers also run a large number of events to support the Gifted and Talented including A* chaser workshops, Masterclasses, trips and visits and external speakers.

Finally, we have a link with Harrow School who run a course called Lumina in June of the first year. Several of our students can attend this free week long programme where they experience lectures from Oxbridge Dons, receive help with preparation for admissions tests, practise interviews and attend the Open days.
